TRIATHLON

Adrenaline Rush Hour

Since it’s historic beginnings in France in the early 1920’s and 30’s the Triathlon has grown into one the worlds top athletic challenges of endurance to the human body and mind.

A triathlon is made up of three disciplines, swimming, biking and running. Each has it’s own technique and training routine, each taking the human body and spirit to it’s breaking point.
But of all the three disciplines the swim is defined to be the greatest hurdle as it is the first of the three challenges and must be completed to continue with the others.

After months and months of training standing at the waters edge amongst hundreds of other competitors, anxiety, nerves, and self-doubt disappear as the silence is broken with of the echoing boom of the start canon sending a levee of competitor’s pouring over the start line, all with one common goal, to complete the swim in the allotted time.

The first 15 to 20 minutes is a frenzy, each swimmer battling for open water, arms flailing, legs kicking in all directions, it is paralleled to a school of Piranhas devouring it’s prey. Those caught in the middle must resort to techniques such as drafting or following other swimmer’s wakes using the “Dolphin kick” and dive underwater to make headway in the turbulent waves to help them out of the mix. Above all it is perseverance and drive that moves them forward around the course, many first timers have said they made it on adrenaline and fear alone.
